Economic Revitalization of Naoshima

June 10:  Naoshima, an island in economic decline, scarred by an industrial waste recycling plant, has been transformed into a tourist destination due to a private company's commitment to creating art projects.  They are supposedly pushing to be one location in the next Bond movie (apparently one of the books is set there) which seems particularly relevant given what we learned yesterday about the desperate need that local governments have to find creative sources of tax revenue.

The "Art house project" in the little village of Honmura (where we stayed), where houses were turned into art exhibitions.  Look carefully and you will see Steve, in one of the few pictures we have of him (since Alex's camera isn't working properly :(
Kusama Yayoi's "Pumpkin" is the island's icon.  Is Alex falling in or falling out?
Alex enjoys his book with goat boy and art man on a bench.
